Great Gatsby Final Paper on Feminism Essay

In his timeless novel The Great Gatsby, author Francis Scott Fitzgerald draws attention to the irrational nature of women and the effect it had on their lives during the 1920s. The female characters in the novel tend to irresponsibly think with their hearts rather than with their heads. Time and again, this way of the thinking leads these women to a life of unhappiness and insecurity. Fitzgerald utilizes tools such as paradox and imagery to effectively display the negative consequences of their choices. Fitzgerald’s purpose is to emphasize the true sufferings of women caused by their own lack of reason. He establishes a candid tone throughout the novel in order to demonstrate to readers that the true source of the emptiness and sorrow felt by women in the 1920’s does not come from the men in their lives, but from their own incoherence. Fitzgerald primarily uses paradox as a strategy that best exemplifies the irrational behavior and decisions women in the novel make. Early on in the novel, Jay Gatsby hosts grand parties at his home hoping to one day lure Daisy, the woman he is madly in love with, back into his life. Most women attend Gatsby’s parties not because they are friends with him, nor because they were invited, but instead to have a carefree time at a stranger’s expense. Jordan regularly attends these extravaganzas at Gatsby’s home; she confesses to Nick one night, â€Å"’I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.’† Her statement  associates grandness with privacy and security, and smaller affairs with loneliness and discomfort. Jordan demonstrates the senseless thinking of many women of the era. They feel the need to be surrounded by strangers and indulge in the finest of things in order to feel intimate or secure. These gatherings are one way women fill the emptiness in their souls. They drink their pain away, dance off their fears, and gossip incessantly. These females are blinded by the spotlight given to them at these affairs. Wealth is mistaken for security as attention is for love. In the same way, Daisy loses the voice of reason in her own life when she marries Tom for his wealth despite being madly in love with Gatsby. The day before her wedding, Daisy is described to be â€Å"lying on her bed as lovely as the June night in her flowered dress-and as drunk as a monkey† (76). Fitzgerald’s use of  paradox exemplifies the struggle Daisy is facing. Although it is her wedding day, and she looks beautiful, the discontent she feels is obvious. Fitzgerald strategically employs paradox to portray the insecurity and despair the women of West Egg feel throughout their lives. Furthermore, Fitzgerald demonstrates the pain of women through his use of imagery. At the first party Nick attends, he witnesses a woman, who although dressed beautifully, and surrounded by glamour, is visibly in misery. She â€Å"had drunk a quantity of champagne, and during the course of her song, she had decided, ineptly, that everything was very, very sad† (pg.51) This vivid description of the woman represents the pain felt by many women during this time period, and wealth’s inability heal it. In the same way, Fitzgerald uses imagery to shed light on Daisy’s unhappiness after her marriage to Tom. Gatsby describes Daisy’s life as a single woman as innocent and pure. Fitzgerald uses color  imagery to exemplify this. She owned a white car, lived in a home described as a â€Å"high white palace† and lived what Gatsby thought was a â€Å"white girlhood†. The use of color imagery emphasizes the purity before she was corrupted by the idea that one could marry for money and still be happy. This use of color imagery once again acknowledges the senseless decisions women made during this time period, and the despairity that backfires on them because of these choices. In the Great Gatsby, author F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays women as irrational in their thinking, behaviors, and actions. This senselessness is supported by the lifelong insecurity and loneliness the women feel as a result of their actions.

Policy Recommendation Essay

The difficulty with any definition of poverty involves the meaning of minimum needs and the amount of money required to satisfy these needs. (Ansel M. Sharp, 2010) Those in poverty sometimes face an additional obstacle to earning an adequate income. Discrimination as we use it means that equals are treated unequally or that the ‘unequal’s are treated equally. Discrimination exists in the labor market when people with equal productivity are paid different wages or people with differences in productivity are paid equal wages. Discrimination can also exist in the product market when consumers pay different prices for the same product. (Ansel M. Sharp, Evidence of Discrimination in Our Economy, 2010) Discuss the major impact to society of the problem. In 2001, some six-point-eight million families, or nine-point-two percent of all families, lived in poverty. This translates into more than thirty-two-point-nine million individuals, a staggering number to many Americans who have never been personally touched by poverty. Indeed, some have characterized those who live in poverty as the hidden poor. Studies have shown that there is a significant turnover in the poverty population: Families and single individuals move into and out of poverty several times throughout the years in response to significant life events. Although no reliable estimate exists for the number of hardcore poverty cases, the incidence of poverty can be easily seen to vary dramatically across a number of demographic characteristics. (Ansel M. Sharp, What is Poverty? , 2010) Just imagine searching through heaping piles of refuse at landfills, looking for anything that could seem partly edible, to satisfy an unending hunger. Many people around the world face this situation every day of their lives. What could have caused a situation like this to occur? The education and skill level, health or handicap status, and discrimination play a vital role in poverty. A major factor determining whether someone will end up living in poverty, education or skill level can make or break an income. Education plays a vital role in acquiring jobs, learning new skills, and bringing home necessities and comforts of life. A person who doesn’t receive an education has a very small chance of making much money and acquiring skills that would bring home a desirable income. Many who do not have an education bring their family into a cycle of poverty, where their posterity doesn’t necessarily have the income to go to college or even don’t have a desire to acquire a high school diploma. Poverty rates are higher among families with only one parent or head of household present. Poverty is also related to age, those very young and those very old have higher rates of poverty than those in their prime and middle-age years. The economic cause of poverty is family incomes depend on the quantities of resources that families can place in employment and the prices received for those resources. To understand poverty, then, it is important to understand what determines the prices paid for human and capital resources and what determines the quantities that can be employed. Under competitive market conditions, the basic principle of wage rate determination is that units of any kind of labor tend to be paid a price equal to any one worker’s contribution to an employer’s total receipts. In other words, workers are paid about what they are worth to employers. What a worker is worth to an employer is referred to by economists as the marginal revenue product of labor. (Ansel M. Sharp, The Economic Causes of Poverty, 2010) Market discrimination may be traced to two primary sources. These are the power to discriminate in the market and the desire to discriminate. In our complex market economy, the wages of workers vary widely. Even workers hired by the same employer to perform similar jobs are often paid different wage rates. The meaning of wage discrimination is clear enough: unequal pay for equal contributions. But proving discrimination depends on being able to distinguish among individuals on the basis of individual efforts and productivity. Generally, humans are paid pproximately what they are worth in a competitive economy. (Ansel M. Sharp, Evidence of Discrimination in Our Economy, 2010) Employment discrimination means that some people are not hired because of non-economic characteristics such as race or gender. Two individuals with the same training, education, and experience apply for a job, however one is black and one is white. If both do not have the same chance of getting the job, discrimination has entered into the decision-making process. There is a growing belief that discriminatory differences in pay, especially gender differences in pay, occur largely because of occupational segregation. In general, men work in occupations that employ very few women, and women work in occupations that employ very few men. The economic results of occupational segregation for women are low wages. Women are often relegated to occupations where productivity and experience have little to do with their status and where opportunities for overtime and premium pay are limited. Price discrimination occurs when people of different races or genders are forced to pay different prices for the same good or service, provided the differences are not due to differences in cost of serving the consumer. Mycorrhiza

The symbiotic relationships that establish involving the roots of major plant species and fungi are called Mycorrhizae. These symbiotic relationships differentiated by the two-way movement of nutrients whereby carbon runs to the fungus. The fungus then facilitates the movement of the inorganic nutrients towards the plant, in that way, it gives a vital connection between the soil and the root of the plant (Smith, 1997).The absorbed nutrients by the mycorrhizal fungi can direct to enhanced plant development and reproduction. Accordingly, mycorrhizal plants are frequently more viable and more capable to endure ecological strains than non-mycorrhizal plants.Mycorrhizal relationships differ extensively in structure and purpose. Basidiomycetes that cultivate among root cortical cells of various tree species which create a Hartig net are called Ectomycorrhizal fungi (Smith, 1997). On the other hand, fungi that under the order Glomales and create extremely pronged forms called arbuscules, co ntained by root cortical cells of numerous herbaceous and forested plant species are called Arbuscular mycorrhizal.Through mycorrhizal fungi, plant is able to respond to colonization (can vary from remarkable development promotion to development depression. Known elements that affect the response of the plant are the following: the nutrient condition of the soil, the inoculum possibility of the mycorrhizal fungi, and the mycorrhizal dependence of the horde crop.Crop rotation, fallowing, and tillage are among management practices that may negatively distress the number of mycorrhizal fungi in the field. Inoculation techniques and methods may be employed in the case wherein native inoculum is short or unproductive. Through the advanced pace of technology in the contemporary and scientific world, inoculation is mainly practicable for uprooted crops as well as in regions where soil interruption has significantly abridged the local inoculum potential. What Mycorrhiza IsA relationship or s ymbiosis involving plants and fungi which takes over the cortical tissue of roots throughout the stages of active development of plant is referred as mycorrhiza. Such relationship is described by the shift of the carbon produced by the plant towards the fungus as well as the movement of obtained nutrients by the fungus to the plant. In 1885, a German forest pathologist Frank first employed the term mycorrhiza (which denotes â€Å"fungus-root†) to the relationship that he observed from between the tree and fungus. From then on, the symbiotic relationships observed between plants and fungi are characterized by mycorrhiza (Smith, 1997).Increased development and yield or environmentally by enhanced condition characterize the advantages that the plants get from their symbiotic relationships. In such ways, the advantage accumulates mainly for the fact that mycorrhizal fungi establish a vital connection between the soil and the roots of the plant (Varma & Hock, 1999). Mycorrhizal fun gi generally propagate mutually in the soil and in the root. The extramatrical hyphae (or the soil borne) adopt nutrients drawn from the soil solution and transfer them towards the plant’s root. In this process, mycorrhiza enlarges the productive absorptive exterior part of the plant. In soils which lack nutrient or moisture, nutrients engaged in extramatrical hyphae can result to enhanced plant development and reproduction. In effect, mycorrhizal plants are frequently more viable in defense of ecological hazards than those plants that are not mycorrhizal (Varma & Hock, 1999).What Mycorrhiza DoesIn cases when there is a lack of soil solution in a nutrient, the surface area is the vital root factor which controls the uptake. The hyphae of mycorrhizal have the possibility to significantly amplify the part of the surface area of the root which main function is to absorb the nutrient. Moreover, it is noteworthy to take consideration on the allocation and role of the extramatrical h yphae. The hyphae must be allocated away from the nutrient reduction region that progress around the root if the mycorrhiza is to be productive in the uptake of nutrient (Smith, 1997). In the case when the nutrients are detached from the soil solution more hastily than they can be reinstated by transmission, a nutrient reduction region is developed.A jagged and thin reduction region is developed near the root in the case of a poorly-mobile ion, for example phosphate. Together with a sufficient amount of phosphorus, hyphae can voluntarily link this reduction region and develop into soil. Mycorrizhae improves the uptake of micronutrients (e.g. copper and zinc) for the reason that these elements are also transmission-bounded in major soils (Varma & Hock, 1999).The reduction region is broad and it is less probable that hyphae develop at length into the region that is not only affected by the root in case of more mobile nutrients, for example nitrate. The narrow diameter relative to root s effectively helps in the absorption of nutrient which is among the significant factors. The abruptness of the distribution incline for a nutrient is conversely associated to the radius of the absorbing unit (Smith, 19970. Consequently, the soil solution should be less exhausted at the outside of a contracted absorbing unit like a hypha. In addition, contracted hyphae can cultivate into undersized soil stomas unreachable to roots as well as to root hairs.Access to band of phosphorus not voluntarily obtainable to the plant is another benefit characterize to mycorrhizal fungi. One method to obtain such access is by the means of physiochemical discharge of organic and inorganic phosphorus from organic acids as a result of the low-molecular-weight organic anions’ action like that of oxalate which can function to either substitute phosphorus absorbed at metal-hydroxide shells y means of ligand-exchange effects, or liquefy metal-oxide shells that absorb phosphorus, or intricate me tals in solution hence averting moisture-generation of metal phosphates (Fox et al., 1990)How the World Sees MycorrhizaMycorrhizal relationships differ generally in composition and role. Notwithstanding the countless exclusion, it is likely to affirm wide-ranging oversimplifications concerning altitude, structure, soil properties, and roles of the various mycorrhizal forms that take over the leading undergrowth in a pitch of climatic zones (Read, 1884).Ericaceous plants (which control the acidic, high-organic heath land soils of subarctic and subalpine areas) are taken over by a cluster of ascomycetous fungi which give ascend to the ericoid-type of mycorrhiza (Smith, 1997). A wide-ranging development inside the cortical cells yet have small expansion into the soil characterizes this mycorrhizal variety. The fungi generate extracellular enzymes that break organic substances which enable the plant to absorb nutrients drawn from organic complexes derived in the colloidal substance conti guous on the roots. Heading alongside the ecological ascent, coniferous trees put back ericaceous shrubs as the prevailing foliage. These trees are taken over by an ample array of typically basidiomycetous fungi that cultivate amid root cortical cells establishing the ectomycorrhizal variety of mycorrhiza (Varma & Hock, 1999).Ectomycorrhizal fungi may generate huge amounts of hyphae in the soil and on the root (Smith, 1997). These hyphae work in the assimilation and transfer of location of water and inorganic nutrients as well as discharge nutrients from waste deposits through manufacture of enzymes implicated in the â€Å"mineralization† of organic substance.Grasslands frequently establish the principal foliage during the more humid and more parched finish of the ecological pitch. Nutrient employment is elevated and phosphorus is often a restrictive factor for development.A broad range of plants and even grasses are taken over by fungi fitting to the order Glomales. These fu ngi establish arbuscules or extremely divided structures within root cortical cells which necessitated the arbuscular variety of mycorrhiza. The Glomalean fungi may manufacture wide-ranging extramatrical hyphae and can drastically enlarge phosphorus-inflow charges of the plants they take over (Smith, 1997).The variety of these root-fungal relationships benefits plants with a variety of techniques and methods for well-organized carrying out in an arrangement of plant-soil scheme. The purpose of this paper is to offer an outline of this variety and to analyze the functions and potential for administration of the mycorrhizal symbiotic relationships in local and controlled ecosystems.ReferencesRead, D.J., Lewis, D.J., Fitter, A.H. & Alexander, I.J. Leadership - Essay Example In order to decide on the most effective approach, the manager must consider the experience and skill levels of employees, the kind of work involved, the organization’s environment and the manager’s natural or preferred style (Schriesheim, 1982). While positive leadership commonly give rewards such as independence and training to employees with an aim of increasing employee morale, negative leadership emphasizes giving penalties. A close analysis of the company’s management has revealed that most supervisors in the company have preferred the application of transformational management over other management styles. The impacts of this management style theoretically include improved employee morale and performance according to Bass (1998). It is however unclear whether its application in the company has and will continue to yield positive fruits. It is in this respect that the organization seeks to carry out a research to make certain whether or not the transformational management style is effective in practice as it is claimed to be in theory with regard to this company. The research will be limited to the company and its employees and will therefore preclude the involvement of other persons or parties. While mention of several management styles will be made, the research will be biased towards the application of transformational leadership vis a vis autocratic leadership. Further, the research will mainly concentrate on determining the effects of supervisors’ application of transformational leadership on employees and their performances at work. In this respect, the research will focus on measuring the impacts of the management style in terms of employee commitment, absenteeism and performance as well as production turnover. In appreciation of the fact that management style of an organization’s leadership has significant and measurable impacts on its (the organization’s) performance, there is a

Terrorism - Essay Example Strongly believing in the cause a person is fighting for, therefore, proves to be the key factor that drives a person into committing acts of terror.2 From a psychological standpoint, it becomes clear the influence people’s beliefs have on their actions. Prominent, social Psychologists advance that people conform to the beliefs of a group in order to find acceptance from other members. Therefore, they adopt their beliefs without questioning them; fearing rejection from the rest. These scholars further posit that people within a group rarely stop to question the beliefs shared by other group members. The psychological, emotional, social and physiological wellbeing brought about by belonging to a group ensures people go out of their way to preserve their positions within the group. In addition, there exists a faction of dominant, leaders within these groups who formulate the code of conduct of group members. Research in Psychology shows that people tend to gravitate towards domi nant, authoritative individuals. They do this by sharing in these people’s believes even when these believes prove to be wrong. This is because these dominant individuals provide their followers with a standard, which can be used to justify their actions.2 Looking at separate acts of terror committed around the world, helps to show how belief plays a crucial role in leading a person to terrorism. ... Dictators played with their followers’ psychological make-up. They did this by twisting their thoughts into believing that their actions were right despite the selfish motives behind their agendas. They understood people’s main weakness of needing something to believe, which gave them a sense of purpose in their lives. In Hitler’s case, he made most Germans believe in the superiority of their race while he rallied for them to commit inhumane acts towards people of other races especially the Jews. As a result, an estimate of about six million Jews lost their lives under the hands of German soldiers in the Holocaust. German soldiers found nothing wrong in their actions because they adored and believed everything Hitler said and further used it to justify their actions. The inhumane treatment of people within the concentration camps spread out all over Germany, and advocacy for World War I & II resulted under the influence of Hitler on people’s beliefs.1 Reli gious beliefs also play a vital role in the guiding of people towards committing acts of terror. Many people around the world gravitate towards believing in a supernatural entity. In most cases, people join religions and begin to believe in the doctrines advanced by these religions because these religions reinforce their faith by giving them something to believe in consistently. Looking back at the history of the Roman Catholic Church, it is apparent that many people gravitated towards this religion because it was the most widespread religion at the time. People believed in the holiness of the papacy and the Holy Mother Church. Therefore, those chosen to form the church’s army believed that their killing sprees were justifiable despite the irony that the command to kill

Biography of an American Public Activist Elizabeth Birch Essay

Biography of an American Public Activist Elizabeth Birch - Essay Example In 1992, as she narrates in her interview, Lotus Development Company had extended their services for the provision of domestic partner benefits; an initiative that she thought would highlight the company’s commitment to its employees, who she believed deserved the same. She contends that as the attorney for gay employees, she felt conflicted on whether she could stand by the gay people and still maintain professionalism as an advocate. This was because in Apple Inc there was normal grassroots process within which employees were building cases for domestic partner benefits. The experience of this woman offers the exact case in regards to how gays were being viewed by the majority or some of the individuals in the state. This then offers an analytical basis of stating the perception and the stereotypes held at the time. Elizabeth narrates that once employees were to provide the cases for the domestic partner benefits they built their cases and sent it to the human resource depar tment. This, she notes, was the undoing of the Apple gay and lesbian community as the human resource department came up with excuses of how not to implement such. Some of the excuses were that for the implementation of such to take place, it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The consequences of this were highlighted by the rejection by Apple’s board of directors. This decision enraged Elizabeth who notes that since she was well known worldwide as the advocate for the gay and lesbian and for providing institutions and municipalities with advice regarding the implementation of sexual non-discrimination policies and domestic partner benefits, the move by the Apple board of directors was unacceptable and was in contradiction with what she believed.

International human resource management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

International human resource management - Essay Example As a function of understanding the list of complexities that must be entertained, this brief analysis will count the following as the main determinants that must be engaged with in order to effectively set wages for multinational employees: level and types of skills required, the overall supply and demand dynamics of the labor force, geographic considerations, employment setting, compensation philosophy, employment stability, tenure, and governmental regulations. It is the hope of this author that be analyzing these key determinants, the reader will be able to draw a further level of inference upon the key dynamics that define the means by which any large multinational firm must engage upon the issues of wage setting and salary concerns with international partners. The first issue that any firm or organization must integrate with is the kinds and level of experience that they require. One can understand this as a simple function of asking whether or not the jobs that are being offere d will require a high level of education or prior experience or whether they can easily be filled by any number of individuals (Winkler et al, 2013). As such, with regards to the British expatriate managers and engineers, the salary determinations can and will be effectively straight forward as they will reflect a slight and/or nominal increase over the rate of pay they received in England due to the fact that they will now be required to move to location and be remunerated based upon the additional strain and hardship that such a lifestyle and location change necessarily portends (Simpson, 2007). Conversely, the externalities of skill necessarily dictate how the local employees will be salaried and to what extent these salaries will be commensurate with or far below the same levels of expertise offered elsewhere in the world. The single most important determinant of labor and the rate at which it is paid is of course the supply and demand ratios that exist within the given system. This can be understood through a situation in which a given economy may have 1000 workers who specialize in the labour fields of A, B, C but only have 5 employees that specialize in labour field D. As a function of this low level of representation within the labour market, these individuals necessarily command a premium; both in the country in question as well as likely within the world at large (Songstad et al, 2011). The supply and demand for labor within a given market is one of the reasons that many firms have sought to export and/or relocate talent acquisition portions of their business to different regions around the globe. In hopes of saving money and finding the cheap and extant talent that can further drive their firm or organization, many entities have sought to merely move operations to where the labor specializations are highly concentrated; albeit not always necessarily cheaper. This is done as a means of providing a base of production and specialization that can be dra wn upon for many years into the future. With regards to the salary concerns for those individuals that will be brought into the given system as expatriates, again concern should be given for these individuals that they are paid commensurately with the specialists in their field at home as well as commensurately, and likely higher than, those individuals who specialize in their own field within the nation in question (Ployhart

Quality Management Organizations - Research Paper Example Quality management ensures that organizations produce high quality products. Quality management in an organization has four main components. The components are quality control, quality assurance, quality planning and quality improvement. Also ix sigma is an important part of quality management (Foster, 2007, p.24). Therefore quality management is not only focused in enhancing the quality of products and services of the organization but also provides the way by which it can be achieved. In order to ensure consistency in the quality of products, it makes use of quality control and quality assurance of the production process. The study will shed light on the importance of quality management in an organization. In this context two companies have been chosen to depict the significance of quality management. The organizations have been chosen according to their total area of operations. The companies are Walmart and Walgreens Store. Now Walmart has been chosen for its national operations, while Walgreens Store has been selected for its local operation. Walmart Stores Inc., popularly known as Walmart is a company which runs warehouse stores and departmental stores. Quality management has always been an important function in the company. Wallmart gets heavily benefitted by implementing various quality management systems. Some of the strategies that Walmart uses to ensure qualities are as follows:- Short flow time: - Walmart uses very short flow time of their products. They alter or recycle their unsold products within a short span of time. This ensures that the company sells quality and fresh products to the customers. Low Inventory Level: - The Company maintains a very low inventory level in order to reduce the level of stored items. This low inventory level assists the company to provide good quality products as well as helps in reducing inventory cost. Walgreen Co. is popularly known as WAGS. As of 2012,

Murder Report - Essay Example Ryan had been drinking lager all night, topping up the beer up with a few shots as the evening wore on. In the night club Ryan happened to see Sukhdev an Asian engaging in loud discourse with Laura in an intimate position. Under the influence of alcohol, Ryan used dirty language against Sukhdev humiliating his Asian identity. Sukhdev’s friends separated him from the scene, ignoring Ryan. The outraged Ryan shifted his anger over her and tried to pull her out when she quitted saying her day with him was over. Ryan never stopped taking liquor and met a friend of him in another club. During exchange of his experience at ‘Gas’ club, the friend fuelled his animosity on Sukhdev and returned back to ‘Gas’ club to meet Sukhdev again who was just leaving ‘Gas’ with a few friend and two young white girls. Ryan dragged them into altercation and began to attack Sukhdev. Sukhdev’s friend too retaliated in the same coin terming Ryan a white scum. Ryan’s friend joined him and showed his muscle power against Sukhdev, by when the door staff of ‘Gas’ called the police to intervene. However, the police caught hold Ryan and brought Sukhdev to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead before arrival. Background: - Ryan was aged 22 at the time of the incident. He had grown up in the north Midlands town where the incident took place in a terraced house close to the mine where his father had worked as a young man. The mine had closed in the early 1980s along with many of the town’s other heavy industries. After losing his mining job Ryan’s father had struggled to find work, eventually finding work as a long distance lorry driver. During the 1950s and 1960s when the local economy was booming, people had been attracted to the town from both Pakistan and the West Indies, often to work in the health service, transport and on night shifts in local factories. More recent migrants from sub-Saharan Afric a, the Middle East and south-eastern Europe had found it harder to get work – often because they were prevented from doing so as asylum-seekers. Despite this inward migration, the town remained overwhelmingly white and many families had lived in the area for generations. Ryan’s father and mother split up when Ryan was four leaving his mother to bring him up along with his elder brother, Damian, and younger sister, Charlotte. During Ryan’s childhood, his mother had a succession of relationships with men, two of whom had, like Ryan’s father, been violent towards her. One of them, a man called Dave, who didn’t work and spent most of the time drinking at home in front of the television, had taken a strong dislike to Ryan and gave him regular beatings, including on one occasion with a baseball bat he kept behind the door, ostensibly to deal with burglars. Ryan had spent some time in hospital as a result of this beating. Ryan also suspected that Dave had been sexually abusing his younger sister but his mother had threatened to throw him out if he didn’t ‘stop making things up’. From the age of nine Ryan had tried to spend as little time as possible at home. Hanging out on the streets, he came into contact with a group of older boys who were amused by his fearless, devil-may-care attitude and adopted him as a kind of mascot. Through his contacts with this group, Ryan began drinking alcohol and then got into taking drugs. By the age of 13, Ryan was a hardened drinker and a regular truant. On the rare occasions

Maria Montessori - Essay Example I believe that children should be educated as per their capabilities and the lower classes should not be left out from the gift of education. Nowadays it is seen that money has become a source for education and many of the gifted individuals are sidelined only because they do not have enough money. Plato has given philosophies on education which clearly show that people should be emphasizing on the importance of education. An idealistic society always has a great educational background and thus education can be considered as the foremost factor of improvisation in this world. This essay would further revolve around the theories of Plato on education and its relation to my personal philosophy when it comes to education (Blackburn 2007; Mill 1867). Education is the key to success in this world as believed by many but it is still seen that many individuals are left behind when it comes to this success factor. Many of the developing countries are still lagging behind in their rate of lit eracy only because individuals in these developing countries do not have a proper curriculum for education. ... emselves the supreme leader of the subject without any competition in their field of subject and this can be considered as a loss to the pillars of education. Many teachers these days do not like being questioned about their subject as they think that they have all that is required in that subject. In other words these teachers consider themselves the ‘God’ of the subject. But this clearly can be said to be wrong as no one in this world has all the relevant knowledge about a particular subject. Plato in his theory of education stated that teachers should always be willing to learn in their lives and they should always be willing to share their knowledge for the greater good of the society. The teachers should not teach to earn but should rather make a primary goal of educating people. Educating individuals is a moral aspect of life which all the teachers should fulfil with respect to the morality in the society. I personally believe that the teachers should teach only to educate individuals so that these individuals can make a difference in the society. Secondly the teacher should be always willing to learn more from his students and thus cross questioning in lectures is an important way through which the teacher can learn even more (Blackburn 2007). Plato’s theory of education was widely based on the life stages in which he termed every life stage as a learning stage. It started from children of six years old to adults of 50 year and above. He believed that in every stage of life individuals are striving to learn more so that they can exist in the society. Similarly I believe that one should never give up learning but should rather dedicate his life to it so that he can learn from every aspect of life until he enters his grave. Plato believed that expertise and

Company law - Essay Example It implies that if somebody starts a business as a limited liability company, the company is regarded as a legal entity with a separate legal personality, which signifies that a company is different from its owners, employees along with shareholders. This in turn assures the advantages of ‘corporate veil’ to the company, wherein the owners, employees and shareholders are directly charged with the damage claims or tort claims caused due to their misconduct or irresponsible conduct with the name of the company. The Salomon principle in this regard emphasises that a company only provides grounds for individuals to act in its behalf and thus, charges in lieu of the tort laws should be treated in a way that makes the decision makers directly, personally and professionally liable for the damages1. In this regard, it has often been argued and has subsequently been under stern arguments that the tort creditors of a subsidiary company holding limited liability shall be deemed as ineligible to obtain the benefits from Salomon principle. It is worth mentioning in this context that because tort creditors are also recognised as involuntary creditors and fall into the classification of unsecured stakeholders2. The case rule in Adams v Cape Industries plc plays an influential role in this context wherein it affirms that employees of subsidiary companies, as involuntary creditors and also as tort creditors should be considered as eligible to demand damage compensations from the parent company. In is in this context that the application of Salomon principle is regarded as unjust in respect to the tort creditors where the parent company bears a rational degree of ‘duty of care’ to protect the interests of its subsidiary tort creditors3. Emphasising this particular issue, the discussion henceforth intends to discuss about the applicability of Salomon principle in the company law. Moreover, the discussion will also emphasize on the various aspects on the basis of which Salomon principle is regarded to be unfair for tort creditors of a subsidiary company. Solomon Principle and Tort Creditors of a Subsidiary Company As mentioned above, the Salomon principle has been developed from the case ‘Salomon v Salomon & Co, Ltd’. The Salomon principle implies that corporate decision makers should be legally entitled to compensate the damages suffered by the stakeholders of the business due to their misconducts or ignorance to ‘duty of care’, as per the relevant tort law. These companies are regarded as private and should be registered under the Companies Act 1862. In this regard, a registered company is determined to possess a separate legal entity as per the Salomon principle, which differentiates the statue of such a company from its shareholders, employees and other individuals associated with it. In this context, a company incorporated under the Companies Act 1862 is treated as an independent individual possessing its own respective rights along with liabilities that are different from the rights and liabilities owned by its decision makers, which further justifies the application of corporate veil in segregating the liabilities of individuals from that of the company as separate entities. There are various instances where the principle of

Othello and Race Essay Example for Free

Othello and Race Essay In Shakespeare’s literary creation â€Å"Othello,† the protagonist, Othello, is a high ranking black soldier in a community of white people. Though he had gained his high marks by sheer perseverance and dedication, as it is in the old times, there are the people’s doubts. He was, after all, still a black man. Shakespeare, through this tragedy had shown the stereotypes of our modern times; that being white presents superiority or a sense of control over people of a different race, specifically those of a darker color. Shakespeare, however, did not mean to degrade or discriminate but rather, he seemed to point out the common mistakes of people that ultimately caused racism. Othello’s race and basically his skin color had played a major factor in the story’s main theme, progress and twists. The story mainly revolve on the struggle of a black man and how he found his happiness, but was cut short by other people’s jealousy and deceit. In his fight for love, the fact that he was black was used against him. It was presented to the woman’s father in a sense that generalizes black people as untrustworthy. It was also the main reason Iago used to point out that his wife Desdemona betrayed him for the love of another man, a man who happens to be of pure white ancestry.

The History And Evolution Of Saarc Politics Essay

The History And Evolution Of Saarc Politics Essay The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) comprises eight countries of South Asia, i.e. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. The idea of regional cooperation in South Asia was first mooted in May 1980 by Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman. President Rahman addressed letters to the Heads of Government of the countries of South Asia, presenting his vision for the future of the region and the compelling arguments for regional cooperation in the context of evolving international realities. The Foreign Secretaries of seven countries in South Asia met for the first time in Colombo in April 1981 and identified five broad areas for regional cooperation. A series of meetings followed in Nepal (Kathmandu/November 1981), Pakistan (Islamabad/August, 1982), Bangladesh, India (Delhi/July 1983) to enhance regional cooperation. The next step of this process was the Foreign Ministers meeting in New Delhi in 1983 where they adopted the Declara tion on South Asian Regional Cooperation (SARC). During the next two years South Asian nations committed themselves to form this South Asian alliance and the process culminated in the First SAARC Summit held on 7-8 December in 1985 in Dhaka where the Heads of State or Government of seven countries, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka adopted the Charter formally establishing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). It is an Association based on the consciousness that in an increasingly interdependent world, the objectives of peace, freedom, social justice and economic prosperity are best achieved in the South Asian region by fostering mutual understanding, good neighbourly relations and meaningful cooperation among the Member States which are bound by ties of history and culture The objectives and principles contained in the SAARC Charter are as follows: Objectives a) To promote the welfare of the peoples of South Asia and to improve their quality of life; b) To accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region and to provide all individuals the opportunity to live in dignity and to realise their full potential c) To promote and strengthen collective self-reliance among the countries of South Asia; d) To contribute to mutual trust, understanding and appreciation of one anothers problems; d) To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance in the economic, social, cultural, technical and scientific fields e) To strengthen cooperation with other developing countries; f) To strengthen cooperation among themselves in international forums on matters of common interests; and g) To cooperate with international and regional organisations with similar aims and purposes. Principles a) Cooperation within the framework of the Association is based on respect for the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity, political independence, non-interference in the internal affairs of other States and mutual benefit; b) Such cooperation is to complement and not to substitute bilateral or multilateral cooperation; and c) Such cooperation should be consistent with bilateral and multilateral obligations of Member States. Preamble to the SAARC Charter The preamble to the SAARC Charter spells out the intention of forming this South Asian alliance as We, the Heads of State or Government of BANGLADESH, BHUTAN, INDIA, MALDIVES, NEPAL, PAKISTAN and SRI LANKA; Desirous of promoting peace, stability, amity and progress in the region through strict adherence to the principles of the UNITED NATIONS CHARTER and NON-ALIGNMENT, particularly respect for the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity, national independence, non-use of force and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States and peaceful settlement of all disputes Conscious that in an increasingly interdependent world, the objectives of peace, freedom, social justice and economic prosperity are best achieved in the SOUTH ASIAN region by fostering mutual understanding, good neighbourly relations and meaningful cooperation among the Member States which are bound by ties of history and culture Aware of the common problems, interests and aspirations of the peoples of SOUTH ASIA and the need for joint action and enhanced cooperation within their respective political and economic systems and cultural traditions' Convinced that regional cooperation among the countries of SOUTH ASIA is mutually beneficial, desirable and necessary for promoting the welfare and improving the quality of life of the peoples of the region; Convinced further that economic, social and technical cooperation among the countries of SOUTH ASIA would contribute significantly to national and collective self-reliance; Recognising that increased cooperation, contacts and exchanges among the countries of the region will contribute to the promotion of friendship and understanding among their peoples; Do hereby agree to establish an organization to be known as SOUTH ASIAN ASSOCIATION FOR REGIONAL COOPERATION hereinafter referred to as the ASSOCIATIONà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Changes in SAARC over a period of time After more than two decades since its founding at the initiative of General Zia-ul -Rahman, the then President of Bangladesh, the number of members is being increased from seven to eight. And for the first time a member with no common border with India Afghanistan joined SAARC. Also China, Japan, US, South Korea and the European Union attended the Summit as observers. It is only logical that in the not very distant future Russia too will be added to the list of observers. SAARC was conceived as an organisation to promote regional economic and technological cooperation. It was expected that such cooperation, if it is sustained will lead to increased political and security cooperation. Both in the case of European Union and ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) the countries concerned had a shared perception of their security challenges.  This did not happen in case of SAARC. There was a war between two members of the SAARC in 1999 and a military confrontation in 2002. Therefore nurturing SAARC as a regional organisation has been a far more challenging task than those faced by organisations like the European Union and the ASEAN. In fact one member of SAARC (Pakistan) refuses to extend the normal most favoured nation treatment to its neighbour (India) though this is a basic prerequisite under the World Trade Organisation regulations. Though there has been a formal agreement to convert the SAARC region into a free trade area, Pakistan and Bangladesh have been reluctant to move towards the fulfillment of that objective. In reality SAARC is largely a name board with annual rituals, not always regularly observed. While in other parts of the world, the trend is towards countries coming together to form larger markets, in South Asia this sentiment prevails only among Sri Lanka, Bhutan and India. Pakistan and Bangladesh do not contribute to the world-wide wisdom that countries coming together to form larger markets is a mutually beneficially proposition.  Ã‚   In Europian countries like Germany and France got over their centuries old animosity. This happened when countries like Germany, Italy, Spain discarded their authoritarian regimes and became democracies. In ASEAN too Indonesia and Malaysia concluded peace after years of confrontation. Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia who fought long wars with the US, which was supported by other ASEAN countries have now become economic and political partners of countries which helped to wage war against them. Unfortunately such radical transformation has not taken place in South Asia. There are reasons to believe that underlying this difference in development may be that religion-based identity exercises greater dominance in some countries of South Asia than nationalism-based identity. In admitting a number of successful economic powers as observers to the SAARC, the expectation is that such interaction may help to convert the mindset of the countries which still resist regional economic cooperation and integration in a world which is rapidly globalising. India has attempted to get Bangladesh into a BIMSTECH arrangement consisting of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Such a change in mindset is a time-consuming process and therefore there should not be exaggerated expectations with the new beginning with entry of Afghanistan into SAARC and five new observers. The future of SAARC appears to be brighter because in the past.   SAARC was buffeted by Cold War tensions and Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh were attempting to exploit the differences between India and China and India and the US. Recent changes in the orientation of US policy and the Washington perception about the need to have a balance of power in Asia and consequent need to enhance Indo-US relations have had a radical impact on Indias relations with China and South East Asia.  Ã‚   Increasingly India is referred to as one of the six balancers of power in the emerging international system. India today has a strategic partnership with Russia, the US and the European Union and a strategic dialogue with China and Japan.  Ã‚   The visits of Premier Wen Jia Bao of China, President Vladamir Putin of Russia, Prime Junichiro Minister Koizumi of Japan and President Bush to India and invitation to India along with China to attend the G-8 summit of advanced industrial powers has helped to transform the situation in the SAARC region towards increasing cooperation.  Ã‚   There is now better realisation that neither India-China nor India-US relations can be exploited by other nations as happened during the Cold War. In the SAARC region democracy is gaining ground. Afghanistan has an elected government for the first time. Recent developments in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal, though yet to result in full blown democracy are moving in a positive direction. In Bhutan monarchy is voluntarily transforming itself into a democracy. Some Pakistani intellectuals argue that the factor that stands in the way of regional cooperation and integration in South Asia is the overwhelming dominance of India which constitutes more than 70 per cent of the population, resources and industrial and agricultural production of the region. It is therefore difficult to compare the evolution of SAARC with that of European Union or ASEAN. In a sense it could be argued that India itself with its multi-culturalism, multilingual, multiethnic and multi religious composition is like a further integrated European Union. Political evolution within India has made it inevitable that India will be federally governed by coalitions of all-India and regional parties with regional autonomy and aspirations fully accommodated. This development is bound to have its impact on the rest of the SAARC region. So will Indias rapid economic development, its aspirations to become a knowledge based society, its secular values and democracy. There were people in Indias neighbourhood who thought Indian unity would not survive. This conviction persuaded them not to invest in the evolution of SAARC over the last two decades. That situation is changing. Though it is unrealistic to expect any immediate radical changes in the attitudes of Pakistan and even Bangladesh towards SAARC there is no doubt that a new era of increasing integration is beginning, because of the forces of globalisation and emergence of an international balance of power. Challenges Opportunities The region is full of challenges and opportunities. South Asia is home to more than 1.5 billion people associated with various racial, lingual and religious groups. Some of the main challenges and problems facing the region include poverty, illiteracy, underdevelopment, terrorism, human trafficking, and racial and ethnic conflicts. Similarly, food and energy crises have also come out as burning issues of the region. In spite of such challenges and problems, South Asia is abundant in human as well as natural resources. When these resources are managed and utilized effectively, the region is sure to make considerable socio-economic progress within a short span of time. The South Asian people have many reasons to be optimistic if we look at the SAARC Charter that has included all the existing realities in the sub-continent, with the countries of different sizes, various levels of socio-economic development, historical legacies between and among the nations of the region. But, when the progress made by SAARC is assessed minutely, we do not find a very encouraging picture in terms of quality of life the people in South Asia. However, SAARC is gradually fostering cooperation among the member states in a wide range of areas. Because of its contributions to promoting peace, good neighbourly relations and bringing about socio-economic transformation in the region, SAARC has become a valuable forum among its member states. As a saying goes: Rome was not built in a day, the regional forum also requires some more time to achieve its goals and objectives.

art history :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the American wing of the Allentown art museum is a small painting that hits really close to home. It is called the View on the Lehigh River above Mauch Chunk. This is a genre scene that shows a small homestead in the foreground of a landscape of the Lehigh River. It was painted in 1862. View on the Lehigh River shows what life may have been like living along the Lehigh during that time. Critics have said his work â€Å"looks as European as it does American† (Gstavus1).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Down the hall in the European wing a painting by Aert van der Neer called River Landscape by Moonlight. It is a small dark painting that is so faint in contrasting colors that the viewer must get very close to it and squint in order to make out all of the objects in the scene. As the title suggests the painting depicts a river landscape, not common for the time. However, in his depiction the river is only visible as the light from the moon is reflecting off of it. The painting is undated, as are most of his works. It’s estimated that van der Neer was born between 1603 and 1604 and it is known that he died in 1677. Analyzing and comparing the two pieces, the viewer can recognize many similarities with in the two. The differences are evidently due to the amount of time that had elapsed between when the two painting were completed.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When the viewer approaches River Landscape by Moonlight by a Dutch artist during the Baroque period, the first impression is made by the artist’s use of light. It is not uncommon to wonder where the faint light is coming from. A closer inspection will reveal that it is the moon peaking out of the cloud filled sky. The moonbeam’s shimmering light directs the viewer down the river, the reflection silhouettes two late night fishermen in the foreground. The river appears to be the brightest as it fades into the horizon underneath by the moon giving the painting great depth. The rivers contours are outlining by the moonlight reflecting off the water, illuminating the river banks ever so faintly. Moving into the shadows on the near bank of the river is a small house; its window pane catches the moonlight and sends it to the viewer. The space hidden in the shadows that contain the house and the wooden are behind it have

Finding Patriotism :: miscellaneous

Finding Patriotism Taking my English writing instructor’s advice, one day during my lunch break from work; I went on a short trip to Faneuil Hall. This historical building blends in with other red brick buildings in Boston. Therefore, you might pass it by, if it were not for the painted red line representing the Freedom Trail and a statue of Samuel Adams in the middle of the plaza. Before entering the building, one might compare this moment with, as Walker Percy says. "Seeing the canyon is made even more difficult by what the sight- seer does when the moment arrives, when sovereign knower confronts the thing to be known. Instead of looking at it, he photographs it. There is no confrontation at all." (589). This may also explain my expectations of Faneuil Hall, picturing how my friends had described it to me. As Waker Percy would say â€Å"the privileged knower† , â€Å" the preformed complex†. As the pamphlet describes: â€Å"FANEUIL HALL TODAY Into the 20th Century, Faneuil Hall has remained an active and important place for Bostonians. In the early 19th Century the three granite structures of the Quincy Market were built to the east of the Hall. These, along with Faneuil Hall’s market stalls, continued to be Boston’s wholesale food distribution center until the 1960s. During the 1970s the entire Faneuil Hall area underwent a major renewal, and today the stalls purvey food to the thousands of visitors each day.† Entering the building, I was expecting to see a museum of some sort, but instead I encountered commercialism everywhere. They were selling things from tee shirts of Larry Bird (a famous basketball player), to Babe Ruth (a famous baseball player). It was disappointing to say the least. Does this have some significance to any sightseers who are expecting to see a historical site? It is a place where one should be inspired by what they are expected to find. Again I am inspired to what, as Walker Percy says â€Å"Will this as Walker Percy says â€Å"the sightseer measures his satisfaction by the degree to which the canyon conforms to the preformed complex†. I then went to the information desk and took a pamphlet, which described Faneuil Hall. I decided to return the following day. Upon further reading the pamphlet, I overlooked the fact that the place had more to offer. The pamphlet describes a meeting room on the second floor and a museum on the third floor.

Crime Control Essay

Crime has become as multifaceted as human nature, impinging on communities and threatening human rights and freedoms. Has the impact of criminal activity become extremely intense, that we as society members have strayed away from honesty and justice? Are individuals no longer valuing integrity and fairness? Criminal justice organizations both public and private sectors goals are to reduce crime within the communities and regain the trust and confidence in a fair and just system for law-abiding citizens. In the process of achieving a fair and just society, due process and crime control tactics must adhere to the ethical dimensions of the criminal justice system. I am prepared to introduce a synopsis that highlights key ethical issues in the justice system that is directly affected by ethical motives. Honesty versus Justice within the Communities Trust is a factor that is lacking within the communities, and the question in mind is how will the criminal justice organization rehabilitate the issue and let justice prevail. Justice is often defined as fairness or the suitable rewards or retribution. Justice focuses more on a person’s rights more than the needs of an individual. So how can justice prevail if community members are fighting against law enforcement, and honesty among officers and the community is obsolete? In many cases, even when people notice a crime, they often turn the other way. According to NPR (2010), â€Å"Witnesses to crimes involving things like gang activities can often be scared away from giving information to police. It does not help that a stop snitching philosophy has been promoted by some hip-hop artists and many urban communities† (para 2). After past incidents of bad treatment by the outside world and law enforcement, it has become a mainstream thought in many minority communities law enforcement is not to be trusted. And if the community cannot trust police officials, the people in the community will not step forward and be honest and aid in the investigations. Police Departments are committed to working with the communities to recognize and resolve community problems. There are departments of employees dedicated to working collectively through an assortment of programs. These programs and services are created in hope that trust and justice will be incorporated back into the community and law enforcement agencies will be able to optimistically impact the community’s quality of life as well as highlight the strengths of neighborhoods. Due Process and Crime Control Tactics Law enforcement has integrated strategies into the communities to prevent and solve crimes that are affecting citizen’s quality of life. Crimes such as theft, burglary, and vandalism are a few areas law enforcement has turned their focus on. Local law enforcement organizations will have to become accustomed to existing policing programs to fulfill the requirements of security. The goal of due process and crime control is to enhance the effectiveness of the community. When the community trusts and believes in the justice field, community members will be more prone to assisting law enforcement. Due process ensures the law is being incorporated in the tactics to prevent and stop criminal acts. Another way for law enforcement to gain the trust and respect of the community is to offer up incentives that demonstrates community enhancements. increased involvement from groups in public decision making increases access to material resources and financial opportunities for underprivileged groups changes in public policy to achieve greater and meet the needs of diverse groups increases in suitable, available community services and common interest groups developing more early childhood and youth programs within the communities Law enforcement organizations have sought to investigate the causes of crime within the communities and lower the level from the hearts of the people being affected by criminal acts. Through the construction of successful joint venture with the community and public and private sectors problem solving procedures are being implemented and ethical standards and being followed. In the awaken of September 11th incident, law enforcement agencies discover that they are understanding that it is important to identify the responsibilities and create goals goals that will reduce crime within the communities and regain the trust and confidence in a fair and just system for law-abiding citizens. According to Lane & Henry 2010, ‘People argue for longer term strategies aimed at dealing with the political, social, economic and cultural factors associated with crime. In doing so, we explore the potential of community development to contribute to crime prevention, particularly community or street crime and violence. Theoretical and practice intersections between community development and certain crime prevention approaches are identified – notably those which link crime and violence with dis-empowerment, poverty, inequality, exclusion, the learning of violence within families and communities, and lack of opportunity for children and young people to develop their potential† (para 1). Conclusion Crime has become as multifaceted as human nature, impinging on communities and threatening human rights and freedoms. The impact of criminal activity has become extremely intense, that we as society members have strayed away from honesty and justice. Law enforcement agencies are working extremely hard to rebuild the union that has been broken. Individuals are no longer valuing integrity and fairness, but with the support from law enforcement, trust will be regained and community members will be more prone to step up and offer assistance. Criminal justice organizations both public and private sectors goals are to reduce crime within the communities and recover the trust and confidence in a fair and just system for law-abiding citizens. In the process of achieving a fair and just society, due process and crime control tactics must adhere to the ethical dimensions of the criminal justice system. I have identified ethical issues in the justice system that is directly affected by ethical motives and come to the conclusion that dedication from both parties is the answer to rebuilding a broken society.

As menti aced before, Dimmesdales sin of adultery was unplowed quiet, as he never publicly confessed his actions, nor took res ponsibility for them.As the minister of the Boston, he was revered and admired by the perfect town. The godly youth said they among themselves. The saint on earth (289), did the congregation bawl regularly. It is because of this acclaim and Dimmesdale wish to keep his amply place in the social power structure that he refrained from publicly revealing his true character. The narration comments on Dimmesdales practices facial expression, And he himself, in so far as he shows himself in a specious light the only truth that keep to give Mr.Dimmesdale a real existence on this earth was the anguish in his inmost soul, (293). The only truth was his anguish. The minister continued to struggle with himself, and subsequently genius night of his dangerous vigils, staggered to the hold up on which Hester had stood years earlier, in an attempt at confession. Pearl and Hester, coming back from an errand, coupled him and Pearl asked if he would stand with her and her give at noontide. Dimmesdales reply overtakeed her as he said, Nay not so, my little pearl for, with the new competency of the moment, all the dread of public exposure, that had so long been the anguish of his life, had returned upon him Not so I shall, indeed, stand with thy mother and thee one other day, plainly not to-morrow (307). In this instance, Dimmesdale disregarded his wishes to liberate his soul and once again refused to own his sin. For some time, Dimmesdale was uncomplaining and carried on with his life, alone his patience late metamorphosed into cowardice, a despicable trait in a man.Further supporting the melodic phrase that Dimmesdale was a hypocrite, is the fact that he preached portentous sermons on the topic of morality and confession, simply was unable to live up to their messages. Roger Chillingworth express this to Hester, his spirit lacks the strength that could contain borne up, as thine has, beneath a burden like thy scarlet garner (343). Dimmesdale could preach the consequences of sin, barely could neither keep himself from sinning nor own up to his sin. When Hester was put onto the scaffold, Dimmesdale spoke to her directly, as he was directed to do by the magistrates, in an effort to force her to give tongue to of her sinner, and said, Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him though he were to footfall down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to cut across a guilty heart through with(predicate) life Thy silence compel him to add hypocrisy to sin? (133). Dimmesdale argued that if her screwr were to step down from his high status onto the scaffold beside Hester, it would be better than for him to hide his sin for eternity.Yet, Dimmesdale, the sinner, did not do this. Lastly, Dimmesdale stated when concourse with Hester, I should long ago have thrown off these garments of mock holiness, and have shown myself to mankind as they will tally me at the judgment-seat. Happy are you, Hester, that clothing the scarlet letter openly upon your twitch Mine burns in secret (383-385) and ultimately expressed to her his jealousy towards her. He envied how public her sin was and stated that he was in agony because his scarlet letter burned in secret.Yet, he, coward and hypocrite that he was, refused to state his sin to the entirety of Boston. sacred Arthur Dimmesdale cannot have his cake and eat it too. His impotence was contemptible. As a minister and attracter of the town, he should have been able to sojourn strong and reinvent himself. Some readers may argue that Roger Chillingworth, Hesters husband, was the more woeful of the two, claiming that he wed Hester knowing she did not love him and that he did not love her, tormented both Hester and Dimmesdale, and turned into a devil. In order to fully study and empathize with Chillingworth, the reader must consider things from his point of view, climb into his skin and paseo around i n it. It was common in Puritan times for couples to wed for gold and security rather than for love. Many of these loveless marriages were successful. In addition, Chillingworths torments towards Hester and Dimmesdale were out of exasperation towards his wife. He, like any other man, mat up it necessary to remain close to his wife, disregarding of the lack of love felt amongst them.Yes, Chillingworth did turn into a bit of a devil in the end, lusting after revenge towards Dimmesdale. But Dimmesdale turned into a floppy, soggy, pigswill of fabric, unable to support himself. Chillingworth was still able to support himself, and properly chase after and acquire his goal. Dimmesdale was not. In summation, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale was an objectionable character not only because of his cowardice, but because of his hypocrisy, lack of moral fiber, and poor choices.Ambrose Bierce, a journalist in the 1940s caveats to his readers, saying note the particulars in which one someone or t hing is, if possible, more objectionable than another. (Think Exist, 9). And as readers of The Scarlet Letter, we do just that the audience realizes the all told disgraceful character of Dimmesdale, a man whose life came apart at the seams because of love, but who, because of his poor choices, was unable to stitch his woolly-headed tapestry back together. In numerous ways, The Scarlet Letter is actually Dimmesdales story, as the central struggle is his.The other characters employ nearly fixed positions while the minister must in one sensational decision dismantle his actions of heptad years time. And it is that reversal that marks his defeat over himself and marks the apex of the novel. whole shebang Cited Hawthorne, Nathaniel. The Scarlet Letter A Kaplan sit down Score-raising Classic.
